Testimonials

Focus has given our boys the opportunity to blow off steam while learning to control their reactions to negative situations. We are happy that while we know that our kids can defend themselves if needed, they are also learning to first try to de-escalate situations to try to avoid physical confrontation. Coach Mike has given them a safe space to not only learn to defend themselves but to also have some tough conversations about things that life may throw in their paths.
— Joe and Kim W.
My classes at Focus have given me the confidence to protect myself and my family. But even more importantly I have learned how to avoid situations by being more aware of my surroundings and the ill intent of some other people.

In my search for high quality reality based training I found Focus Counter Violence. I drove 4 hours to have the opportunity to learn from Mike and Joel for 3 solid days of training. It was a fantastic experience. I learned more in a weekend at Focus than I did training a year at other gyms. They helped me in my training and development and helped me to be a better instructor. If you want more than just a feel good system that doesn’t prepare you for real world violence go train at Focus!

I highly recommend Michael Van Beek and his training methods for Law Enforcement training. I have trained with Mike and have benefited from his knowledge and training methods. In this day and age where police are called in to question for every action /decision that is made in the area of use of force , it is important to have all the tools that Mike offers at your disposal.

A note from Michael vanbeek

I’ve spent my whole life surrounded by fighting, martial arts and violence. Childhood bullying led me to martial arts as a kid. From working security to fighting in the cage, from being educated in criminal justice and trained as a bodyguard, to fighting in county jail, I’ve figured a few things out. I have been Focused on one thing since then share this knowledge and help as many people as I can.

Violence wasn’t as most martial arts claimed it was. Life on the streets and violence had become, for a time, my most honest teachers. Without the context of how, why and where someone would use the self-protection training, all the martial arts stuff fell apart.

Superior training doesn’t always mean stronger, harder, faster! Most of the time it means smarter. I found, that If we could train the context in which we used our training with more accuracy, we wouldn’t have to learn a million different moves. This is simple, but not easy.

The truest part of good training is the measure in which it affects us and our character. And, through deliberate practice, exposes us to our ever growing potential and uncovers our truest value. A transformation then takes place. A beggars humility is forged into the humility of a warrior.

Everything great or amazing that you have ever done in your life has started with feeling nervous, awkward and a little uncomfortable. If you are willing to face that and make it into Focus, I believe you will be better than you believe.

See you soon,

Michael
